Born in Switzerland in 1924, naturalized French in 1995 and passed away at the age of 97 last Dec. 28, 2021, Sabine Weiss lived and worked for more than seventy years in her Paris home, also home to her archive. Never anecdotal, the great photographer always sought to chronicle small gestures in her shots, immortalizing emotions and feelings, in keeping with the approach of French humanist photography. Weiss was introduced to photography at a very young age by the Boissonnas and by the mid-1940s became Willy Maywald's assistant, specializing in fashion and portraiture. In the 1950s she began her own path as an independent photographer and together with her husband, the American painter Hugh Weiss, she frequented other artists, sculptors, and musicians including Braque, Chagall, Giacometti, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Utrillo.
The volume traces the photographer's entire career, from reportages for the most important and popular magazines of the time, such as The New York Times Magazine, Life, Newsweek, Vogue, Paris Match, and Esquire, to portraits of artists, from fashion to street shots with an emphasis on children's faces, to her numerous travels around the world. Curator Virginie Chardin's essay traces Weiss's life and work, while the text by Casa dei Tre Oci artistic director Denis Curti analyzes Weiss's experience in light of a comparison between French humanist photography and Italian neorealism. The catalog also offers an appendix that includes an updated biography of the photographer, accompanied by illustrations of historical documents and magazines, along with a selection of solo and group exhibitions and a thorough bibliography of the artist.
